Toome Hill was once used by townspeople as grazing land, but it was gifted to the University of Tartu by Emperor Paul I. For centuries, it served as a central place for the local population, and later, a castle was built there, making Toome Hill the heart of medieval Tartu.

With its rich history and natural elevation, Toome Hill is one of the favourite spots for locals to enjoy greenery without leaving the city. In the cathedral located on the hill, you can visit the University of Tartu Museum, which offers an overview of the university’s history and scientific heritage, and enjoy panoramic views from the tower platforms.

As you stroll through the park, you’ll come across the iconic Angel’s Bridge (Inglisild) and its counterpart, the Devil’s Bridge (Kuradisild), along with monuments, outdoor exhibitions, and university buildings such as the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Observatory and the old Anatomical Theatre.

The park is accessible with a stroller, there is a playground for toddlers, and a sports area with outdoor equipment for more active visitors.

Description

The walk can be started from the University of Tartu Museum, where there is a slightly hilly but wheelchair-accessible path. Alternatively, you can begin near Rüütli Street, though that route includes stairs.

When entering the park from the museum side, it is also accessible with a stroller. There is a playground for toddlers and a sports area for more active visitors.

There are no separate mobility aids for visually impaired visitors, such as a site map or guiding paths.
