“Spilve” airport was Riga’s main airport until the opening of Riga Airport in 1975, and it continues to play a role in the Latvian aviation industry. Today, “Spilve” is used mainly for private flights and pilot school training. The State Inspectorate for the Protection of Cultural Monuments has included the central building of “Spilve” airport, with its avenue, in the list of state protected cultural monuments. The cultural, historical and artistic value of the complex has been recognised. As of 12 May 2012, the site is open to the public – open on weekends.
“Spilve” airport building easily accessible, access to the building via the main entrance without elevations (historic granite paving uneven). The airport building has its own lobby, a well-visible space with smooth, hard flooring. Only the ground floor is accessible to people with reduced mobility. A lift is required to reach the 2nd floor level. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet on the ground floor.
