When Riga Central Market was originally opened in 1930 it was soon recognized as not only as Europe’s the largest marketplace, also having the most modern facilities of the entire region. Having been renamed the Central market of Collective farms, in 1943, it was likewise praised highly by the Soviet authorities.
In 1997, the entire Riga Old city, along with the Central Market, were recognized by the UNESCO as belonging to its List of World heritage sites.
As the market activity exclusively takes place on the ground floor, the pavillions ARE accessible. However, no customized toilet is available on the market grounds. A parking lot for invalids has been set up.
