Object list
Description:
Accessible route (by car), for wheelchair users recommended with an assistant
The route allows visitors to get to know Liepāja’s Karosta and Liepāja’s immediate surroundings – Zirgu island and the lovely village “Bernāti” on the shore of the Baltic Sea, beloved by vacationers.
Main objects of interest on the route:
In Karosta – Northern Breakwater, Orthodox Cathedral and Karosta Prison
Karosta is a paradoxical and unique place not only in the context of Latvia, but also in the historical and architectural context of the world. Karosta is the largest historical military garrison in the Baltics and constitutes almost a third of Liepāja’s territory. It was planned as a completely autonomous area with its own infrastructure, electric power station, water supply system, church and schools. Under the Soviet occupation regime it was a closed territory, not even accessible to local civilians. The last soldiers of the Soviet army left Liepāja only in 1994. The modern Karosta has a peculiar blend of military brutality and ornate end-of-19th century architecture that is at the same time suitable for a civil and modern life as well as for business.
In Liepāja – Lake Liepaja Zirgu Island 4km, 1h (path and nature education house, accessible WC) and Lake Liepaja Boardwalk
In Bernāti – Bernāti beach boardwalk 0,6km, 0,5h and Latvia’s westernmost point mark “Zaļais stars”.
Where to eat: Cafe Bernātu dzintariņš. Dry accessible toilet near the sea-coast at the westernmost point mark.
