The origins of the Latvian War Museum are linked to the events of World War I on Latvian territory and the formation of the national military unit—the Latvian Riflemen Battalion. From 1957, the building housed the Museum of the Revolution of the Latvian SSR, which interpreted Latvia’s 20th-century history from the perspective of Soviet ideology. However, during its existence, the museum had amassed valuable collections that characterized the Soviet system. As the process of restoring Latvia’s independence began, the reopening of the Latvian War Museum in 1990 was a natural step. The museum’s goal is to reveal to the public the complex military and political history of Latvia, with a particular focus on the 20th century, during which the Latvian people had to fight for their independence twice. The museum has an elevator that provides access to all floors, except for the mezzanines. The Powder Tower is not accessible to people with mobility impairments. To enter the museum, the outer door is very difficult to open. It is opened by a security guard. It is best to go with an assistant.
