Established under the National Fire and Rescue service, the museum is tasked with research in the historic traditions of firefighting and civil defensein Latvia, along with increasing public awareness of these topics. Originally established in 1911, this historical fire station contains the original quarters of the fire chief, his deputies, an engineer, coachmen as well as regular firemen.
A major restoration project has been started for the near future (concluding in 2025). Using EU funds, the historical collection will be updated with modern, interactive features, including simulated training for different emergencies.
Road surface at front door very bumpy (Preserved from historic pavement.) Parking lot fot invailds can be found nearby. If necessary, the front door will be opened wide and an access ramp deployed for wheelchair entry. No accessible toilet is available. As there is currently no elevator, the upper floor CANNOT be accessed with a wheelchair. In the farther future, an elevator could be installed.
