Description:
City walking route recommended for wheelchair users with an assistant
The route leads through the key touristic attractions in the centre of Kuldīga and allows to get to know the central part of the town during the 4km walk.
The historical centre of Kuldiga has been really well-preserved and nowadays the streets of Kuldīga feature the historical cityscape from the 16th – 18th centuries, when the city was known as Goldingen.
The walk begins at the Liepāja Street Promenade with the object “Teleport”, which represents the duke of Kurzeme – Jēkabs in two eras – the 17th and the 21st centuries, creating the impression that the duke symbolically “enters” nowadays.
Make sure not to hurry while walking through the historical centre of Kuldīga and pay attention to different small nuances – entrance doors and other decorative parts of historical buildings, curves of the tiny river Alekšupīte, which flows along the walls of historic buildings and is crossed by many bridges, Kuldiga is also affectionately referred to by its inhabitants as “Venice of Latvia”, and, of course, enjoy the charm of the longest waterfall in Europe (Venta Rapid) from the old brick bridge built in 1874, which is being nicely illuminated during the dark hours of the day. There is also the Kuldīga Museum near the bridge, which is acessible also to wheelchair users. For those who love swimming, there’s also a possibility to have a swim at the Mārtiņsala beach right next to the Venta Rapid. Access to the beach, though, might be difficult for wheelchair users, as the last stretch of the gravel path leading to the beach has not been adapted (~ 20m) and is quite steep.
Main objects of interest on the route: object “Teleport”, Liepāja Street Promenade, Needles tower, St. Catherine Evangelical Lutheran Church, Alekšupīte waterfall, Artists’ Residence Gallery and object on the tower of the building, Old brick bridge, object “Jesus on a SUP board”, virtual reality stand with the old Kuldīga castle, Venta rapid, watching tower, Kuldīga Museum, City garden , Living Museum “Story of Ancient Kuldīga”, bridge over the Alekšupīte River, Old Town Square with Kuldīga Tourism Information Center and Town Hall, St. Trinity Catholic Church, local produce shop “Kuldīgas Labumi”.
