At the Carnikava Local History Centre (7 Jomas Street), visitors can explore the rich history and fishing traditions of Carnikava Parish. The centre was opened in 2012, and its building is a replica of the authentic fisherman’s and ferryman’s house “Cēlāji,” originally built in 1851 near the mouth of the Gauja River. Historically, this site was an important ferry crossing on the old Riga–Pärnu road, where the inhabitants transported passengers and goods across the river until the late 19th century. The original building can now be seen at the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum.
The centre offers a wide range of activities and services:
*an exhibition on Carnikava’s history and fishing traditions (free guided tours available);
*museum education programmes for children of different ages;
*boat trips along the Gauja River;
*preparation and tasting of lamprey soup during the fishing season;
*a venue for wedding ceremonies and wedding stop programmes;
*rental of premises for seminars and educational events;
*recreation, picnic, camping, and bonfire areas;
*a slipway and pontoons for boaters;
*opportunities to participate in cultural and sports events organised in Ādaži Municipality.
Particularly popular are the educational programmes “Visiting a Carnikava Fisherman” and “Lamprey Hour.” Carnikava is known as the “Kingdom of Lampreys,” where lamprey is both a symbol and an important part of local identity. During the programme, children learn about lamprey fishing, take part in creative activities, and make their own souvenir. In the fisherman-themed programme, participants can explore traditional skills such as net mending, knot tying, and other practices. The programmes are suitable for various age groups and are also available for adults (with prior booking by phone: +371 29128086).
Visits to the centre are also possible outside regular opening hours by prior arrangement via phone +371 29128086 or through the Carnikava Tourism Information Centre (16 Rīgas Street).
In addition, special equipment for short-term use is available at the centre – a hiking wheelchair and a wheelchair transport bicycle. This provides people with mobility impairments the opportunity to go outdoors together with companions and explore the Carnikava area.
To use the equipment, prior reservation is required by calling +371 29128086. Terms of use are available separately.
