The theatre is the only professional theatre in Vidzeme region. Valmiera Theatre was founded in 1923. Since the 1990s, the theatre has operated in a building designed by architect Modris Ģelzis, replacing the more than 100-year-old wooden house of the Valmiera Latvian Society. In October 2021, the reconstruction of the Valmiera Theatre building began. On 16 July 2024, the renovated theatre building was put into operation. A café is open one hour before the performance and during the intervals in both the theatre and the Kurtuve.
After the reconstruction, disabled people have access to toilets, parking spaces and a lift. Access to the theatre is also accessible, there is an acoustic loop inside and information about the floors is in Braille.
