Town Hall Square is a square located in the center of Tartu, with the Tartu Town Hall situated on its edge.

Küüni Street, Rüütli Street, and Kompanii Street all begin from Town Hall Square. Its side facing the Emajõgi River is bordered by Vabaduse Boulevard, and Ülikooli Street runs behind the Town Hall.

In the Middle Ages and early modern period, a market operated in front of the Town Hall, which is why the square was also known as the Great Market (Suurturg).

Although a regular market no longer operates on Town Hall Square, various fairs are held there: the spring fair (also known as the May Fair), the autumn Maarjapäev fair, and the Hanseatic Fair during Tartu Hanseatic Days. The square is also a venue for various celebrations and concerts.

Description

The main surface material of Town Hall Square is cobblestone, but some areas (the left and right side streets and the connecting part in front of the Town Hall) are covered with level paving. There are different seating options on the square, including benches with armrests and summer outdoor terraces, many of which are accessible due to their location directly on the street level.

There are no separate tactile or guiding paths or warning surfaces for visually impaired people, and there is no tactile map of the area. In the center of the square stands the “Kissing Students” fountain, which can be approached relatively closely with a mobility aid.

Nearest accessible toilet on Rüütli street inside Kampus (right door next to the entrance, second floor by elevator).
