The name Malkalns comes from the fact that the soil at the base of the hill is clayey. In the past, a wide view of the city lake and the Tukum skyline opened from the hill, which is 62 m above sea level. Jelgava street winds along the mountain, leading to the city center. At the foot of the hill by the lake there used to be a water mill and a Mālkalns pub, but now a dairy works here.

From the highest point of Mālkalns you can still enjoy the view of the Slocene river valley and the city of Tukuma.

In 2010, celebrating the 77th birthday of the poet Imants Ziedonis, the Imants Ziedonis cherry garden with 77 decorative cherries was planted in Mālkalns. A year later, the garden was replenished with 60 short sour cherries, in 2013 with another 100 trees, and in 2014 with approximately 200 cherries. The words of the poet “Let me go into the world in beauty, as cherries bloom in Tukums!” have already become a symbol of Tukums.

Tukums was an important place for Imants Ziedonis – his personality was formed here and he spent his teenage years studying in high school, getting to know both the city environment and the teachers. Therefore, Mālkalns is one of the stops on the tourist route “Catch Ziedonis”. Each stop on this route offers not only a look at local objects, but also a closer look at the life story of Imants Ziedonis using an audio guide.

At the moment, the main attractions in Mālkalns are the monument to “Liberators of Tukums” created by sculptor and Tukums governor Arta Dumpe, a playground and a cherry orchard. A network of footpaths has been created on the hill, which allows visitors to walk comfortably and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the place.

Improvement of Mālkalns and development of greenery continues. In the coming years, the existing footpaths, benches and sunbeds for watching the sunset will be supplemented with informative stands. It is planned to create the Meadow zone, the Landscape Park and the city’s Forest School, which will provide additional infrastructure improvements.

Currently, the footpaths are partially accessible and a picnic area has been set up for visitors near the parking area so that everyone can enjoy this beautiful place in Tukums.
