This summer we’ve visited many lakes in Latvia to see their suitability for people with mobility impairments. During our visits we saw both, accessible and partly accessible resting areas near waters with various facilities – from adapted footbridges and swimming areas to changing cabins, parking lots and nature trails near lakes.
In Kurzeme – an accessible and really nice wooden boardwalk goes along Lake Liepāja, with a modern Nature house on the coast. A footbridge across the whole lake is available on Lake Kazdanga, as well as an accessible nature trail and other amenities. Lake Būšnieku near Ventspils offers particularly extensive opportunities, where a floating wheelchair, tactile stands, changing cabins and a parking lot for people with disabilities are available. Lake Usma stands out with the Elkrags nature trail with tactile elements and the opportunity to stay in an accessible room at Usma SPA.
At Laidze Lake, visitors will find accessible parking, other facilities and a comfortable resting place near the Laidze Bathhouse. It is a quiet place to enjoy peace, orderly surroundings and leisurely relaxation in nature.
Located in the heart of Talsi city, Lake Talsi is easily accessible, as there is a parking lot available at the cultural center and a wooden path. Although swimming is not intended here, the lake promenade offers a beautiful place for walks and observing the rhythm of the city and reproductions of paintings. Public WC is accessible as well.
Lake Vilkmuiža in Talsi is currently undergoing transformations – improvement works are underway, but there is already a WC and parking available here. This means that in the near future visitors can expect an even more comfortable and tidy environment together with a path around the lake.
At Lake Sasmaka near Talsi area, everyone can enjoy a walk along the swimming area, as there is a convenient and accessible way to get around. Parking and WC are also available. This is a place for leisurely relaxation with a view of the lake.
Lake Valgums is special with its Art Trail – a walking route in nature, which is suitable for parents with baby strollers. This is not a place suitable for swimming, but an opportunity to experience the interplay of nature and art, which gives the lake’s surroundings a unique atmosphere.
Lake Ciecere in Brocēni offers an accessible walking trail and a boardwalk along the lakeshore, as well as amenities on the central beach. Meanwhile, at the small port of Ciecere, there is an adapted changing cabin and the opportunity to go on a trip on the “Zezer” boat, which allows you to get to know the lake from a completely different perspective – that of a water traveler.
At Lake Saldus, there is a swimming area, changing cabin, WC and parking lot. Although improvement works are currently ongoing, this place promises to become even more attractive and convenient for all visitors soon. From here, a long and accessible nature trail throughout the whole city stretched along the coast of the River Ciecere with tactile J.Rozentals paintings.
Durbe and Alsunga lakes are accessible to a certain extent. At Durbe Lake, a parking lot and amenities are available to vacationers near the observation tower, which makes this place suitable for a short stop in nature or fishing. Alsunga Dzrirnavezers Lake is partly accessible – there, it is possible to drive to the water and visit the first floor of the Alsunga Craft House, but there are currently no additional amenities at the lake.
In Zemgale, the Tērvete reservoir stood out during the surveys, where there is a footbridge, WC, and bird watching tower (first platform accessible), which is convenient for everyone to visit. Environmental accessibility is also ensured in two glamping houses.
Ozolnieki Lake, Radži Reservoir with a parking lot, amenities, and a walking trail to the observation platform, and Zuju Lake, where swimming areas and footbridges have adapted solutions for people with mobility impairments.
In Latgale, Stropu Lake in Daugavpils delights visitors with an adapted beach, swimming areas and amenities, while Svente Lake has a walking trail. Lake Ežezers is marked as partially accessible. in Latgale you can also visit Balvu Lake, Kovšu Lake in Rēzekne and Cirīša Lake.
The visited lakes prove that accessibility is gradually becoming an integral part of watertourism as well. nature and watertourism can be enjoyed not only in summer, but also in autumn, when the lakes are surrounded by special peace and richness of colors. It is a great opportunity to go for walks, watch birds or simply relax in nature, knowing that these places are accessible to everyone.
