On December 4, 2024, a solemn and emotionally touching awards ceremony took place in the Ziedonis Hall of the National Library of Latvia. The ceremony honored the winners of the “Annual Award for Supporting People with Disabilities 2024,” recognizing the main awardees, honorable mentions, and acknowledgments. During the event, Latvia’s outstanding athletes — Paralympians and their coaches — were also celebrated with standing ovations for their achievements.

The event was graced by the U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, Christopher Robinson. Additionally, an address from the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, was delivered by his advisor on legislative and international legal matters, Kristīne Līce.

The “Annual Award for Supporting People with Disabilities,” organized by the Ombudsman in collaboration with the organization “Apeirons” and the National Library of Latvia, has become an annual tradition. This year marked its tenth anniversary, highlighting individuals, organizations, and businesses actively advocating for the interests of people with disabilities. The competition accepted nominations in two categories — “Individual Achievement” and “Collective Achievement” — across eight different nominations. This year’s competition saw the second-highest number of applications in its history, with 124 submissions.

The jury faced a challenging task in selecting the best among the many remarkable candidates, as all nominees stood out for their humanity and heartfelt dedication, qualities that are difficult to measure in numbers. Among the nominations were “Dare to Act,” “Employment Promoter,” “Social Media Voice,” “Inspiration for Children and Youth,” and others.

The “Collective Achievement” category was won by the Kurzeme Planning Region for its contribution to creating an accessible and inclusive environment in Kurzeme. Highlights of their efforts include:

*Ensuring access to floating wheelchairs, pathways, and changing cabins at Apšuciems Beach and by Lake Būšnieki in Ventspils, enabling everyone to enjoy swimming and outdoor relaxation.

*Introducing virtual reality glasses at the Sabile Tourism Information Center, offering a new perspective on the Sabile Wine Hill.

*Conducting over 50 accessibility audits of tourism and cultural sites across Kurzeme and creating 7 specially adapted routes.

This award is a testament to dedicated work and collective efforts to make Kurzeme an accessible and inclusive region.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who promotes positive change and contributes to creating an accessible environment for people with disabilities!
