Another significant step has been taken in Kurzeme towards making nature accessible to all – including people with mobility impairments. A modern, inclusive beach infrastructure has been created in Apšuciems, allowing everyone – regardless of age or functional abilities – to enjoy the proximity of the sea safely, comfortably and without barriers.
Modern solutions – barrier-free access
A 20-meter-long wooden boardwalk has been created on Apšuciemas Beach, which is wide enough to allow both people in wheelchairs and parents with strollers to move comfortably along it. The boardwalk leads to the sea, along the way there is a sunbathing platform, where you can enjoy the sea views in a comfortable and safe environment.
A changing cabin has also been created next to the beach, specially adapted for people with mobility impairments and parents with babies. The cabin is located in a conveniently accessible place – right next to the parking lot, and a concrete ramp with a wooden boardwalk leads to it. The wide, easy-to-open doors and enough space inside make it a functional and convenient solution for every visitor.
There is also a disabled parking lot at the very entrance to the beach, while an accessible toilet is located nearby.
The sea for everyone – even in the water
To ensure that everyone can enjoy the joys of the sea, floating wheelchairs are available in Apšuciems, which ensure safe and comfortable movement in the water. These wheelchairs can be used free of charge by registering in advance by calling +371 26132761 (pickup at Apšuciems School).
Project “Accessibility of Hiking Trails”
The creation of the Apšuciemas accessible beach is part of the project “Accessibility of Hiking Trails” implemented by the Kurzeme Planning Region, which aims to make nature and tourism infrastructure accessible to all groups of society.
International cooperation and exchange of experience
On May 23-24, 2025, the Baltic Hiking Tourism Conference was held in Apšuciems, bringing together participants from Latvia, Estonia, Switzerland, France, Serbia, Portugal and other European countries. During the conference, participants discussed accessibility issues and introduced innovations – including specialized hiking and cycling wheelchairs, as well as audio guides and volunteer involvement opportunities.
The culmination of the conference was the opening of the new accessible beach, which was attended by Aija Neilande, Project Manager of the Kurzeme Planning Region, and Gundars Važa, Chairman of the Tukums Municipality.
Inclusive tourism – a reality today
This project is a clear demonstration that inclusive and accessible tourism is not a future idea – it is a reality today. In Kurzeme, it is being implemented step by step – with concrete solutions that improve people’s quality of life and promote equal opportunities for recreation in nature.
